EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
