Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
